Firstly because two clubs may have joined forces to become one club. For example, Newcastle United used to be two different clubs known as Newcastle West End and Newcastle East End, until they joined together to form one united team. 🤝
Secondly, to represent the togetherness of the club ♥️ For example, Leeds United were formerly known as Leeds City, but after some financial problems and clashes with the FA, the club fell apart. But their loyal fans and players refused to let their club go, and so when they saved it, it was renamed Leeds United.
Thirdly, to represent new beginnings 📖, for example Man United were formerly known as Newton Heath, but when they were saved from bankruptcy in 1902, the new owners renamed the club to symbolise a fresh start.
And lastly for sponsorship deals 💰 having the word United in your club's name proved to be a good way of attracting new partnerships in the past, and so clubs would rename and rebrand for better sponsorship opportunities.
